During outdoor sports or daily activities, falls and injuries are inevitable. When faced with a wound, bandages and gauze are our go-to tools for first aid. But do you know the difference between them?
Bandages: A bandage is a relatively wide, long strip of material-typically made of cloth or elastic fabric-that possesses a certain degree of elasticity. They are used to immobilize, support, and protect an injured area.
Gauze: Gauze is a lightweight, breathable material-made of cotton or synthetic fibers-used to cover wounds, absorb seeping blood and secretions, and prevent bacterial infection.
1. Using Gauze:
(1) Clean the wound: First, clean the wound using saline solution or a mild cleanser to remove dirt and bacteria.
(2) Cover the wound: Gently place the gauze over the wound, ensuring that the entire wound is covered; however, do not apply it too tightly, as this could impede blood circulation.
(3) Secure the gauze: Use medical tape or a bandage to secure the gauze in place around the wound, preventing it from slipping off.
2. Using Bandages:
(1) Immobilize the injured area: Based on the location and severity of the injury, select an appropriate bandage to immobilize the injured area in a proper position, thereby reducing pain and preventing further damage.
(2) Apply compression: For wounds with significant bleeding, a bandage can be used to apply compression; however, be careful not to wrap it too tightly, as this could impede blood circulation.
(3) Provide support and protection: Bandages can also be used to support and protect joints, muscles, and other structures, aiding in the recovery of the injured area.
