(1) First, check the packaging labels and product instructions. Finished gauze products generally come in two forms: non-sterile and sterile. The instructions or packaging must clearly state whether the product was released from the factory in a sterile or non-sterile state.

(2) Sterile-packaged medical gauze can be used immediately, whereas non-sterile gauze must be sterilized-using methods such as high-temperature, high-pressure steam or ethylene oxide-before use.

(3) For sterile-packaged medical gauze, the packaging must clearly indicate the sterilization expiration date, the date of manufacture or production batch number, a warning against use if the packaging is damaged, and a statement indicating single-use only (or a "do not reuse" symbol). Do not purchase or use the product if the packaging is damaged or the expiration date has passed.

(4) When purchasing medical gauze, examine the product's appearance. It should be soft, odorless, tasteless, and pure white in color, free from foreign fibers or processing residues; furthermore, it should not exhibit strong blue fluorescence under ultraviolet light.
