A former US Marine was sentenced on April 21 to 12 years in prison for smuggling drugs from Mexico into the United States for years.
Roberto Salazar II, 26, of San Diego, was sentenced for trafficking fentanyl and conspiring to distribute heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and other drugs, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney's office, the Associated Press reported.
Federal prosecutors said Salazar had been stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego. While serving in the Marine Corps, he and the followers he recruited conducted dozens of cross-border smuggling operations beginning in 2015. Salazar's followers were mostly former Marines or classmates from his time at Southwest College in Chula Vista, the report said.
The U.S. attorney's office said Salazar, who was arrested and pleaded guilty in October, "was so deeply involved in the illegal drug trade that he commissioned a Mexican composer to write a drug-related ballad for him, entitled 'Corridor of Drugs.'"
U.S. Attorney Randy Grossman said, "This case involves a Marine who was supposed to protect and defend our country, but instead caused great harm to the American people by trafficking fentanyl and other dangerous drugs. He also betrayed his solemn oath by recruiting other Marines to do the same."
