According to Reuters, on December 20 local time, 11 American writers, including Taylor Branch and Stacy Schiff, sued the American artificial intelligence company "Open Artificial Intelligence Research Center" (OpenAI) and Microsoft in federal court in Manhattan, New York, accusing it of misusing their work to train chatbot ChatGPT.
The authors told the court that OpenAI violated their Copyrights by copying their works in bulk from the Internet without permission and incorporating them into ChatGPT's training data. They also said Microsoft was liable for infringement because of its "deep involvement" in training and developing AI models. The authors are seeking unspecified damages and an order to stop the companies from infringing copyright.
OpenAI and Microsoft did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The lawsuit is the latest legal challenge for OpenAI. Several US authors have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI for copyright infringement. To make its AI language model more powerful, OpenAI draws on vast amounts of data collected on the web, such as Wikipedia articles, works by famous authors, and social media posts.
