Canadian Foreign Minister Stephen Jolly said on the same day that Canada wants to hold private talks with India to resolve the diplomatic row over the killing of Canadian citizen Nijar. Reuters reported earlier that India had asked Canada to withdraw 41 of its diplomats.
Earlier in the day, the British Financial Times reported that the Indian government had told the Canadian government that it must withdraw 41 diplomats from India by October 10, and threatened to revoke their diplomatic immunity. Canada currently has 62 diplomats in India. On September 22, India announced a moratorium on issuing new visas to Canadians and asked Ottawa to reduce its diplomatic presence in the country.
Neither Jolly nor Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded when asked if the Financial Times report was accurate. "We are in contact with the Indian government. We take the safety of Canadian diplomats very seriously and we will continue to engage privately because we believe diplomatic conversations are best conducted in private, "Jolly told reporters.
Trudeau said the Canadian government did not want the dispute to escalate. "We take this very seriously and we will continue to engage responsibly and constructively with the government of India," Trudeau told reporters at a separate event. Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Jaishankar said earlier that Indian diplomats in Canada faced an "atmosphere of violence" and an "atmosphere of intimidation." In Canada, the presence of Sikh separatist groups has frustrated New Delhi.
In an emergency speech on September 18, Trudeau made an "explosive accusation" against the Indian government, saying that Canadian security agencies had been closely pursuing a "credible allegation" of a potential link between Indian government agents and the killing of Nijar, a Canadian citizen. Nijar, a Sikh leader who was listed as a terrorist by the Indian government in July 2020, was shot dead outside a Sikh cultural centre in Surrey County, British Columbia, Canada, in June.
