According to Reuters, the US Republican senator proposed a sharp increase in tariffs on the 5th local time, imposing a new tariff of $20,000 on imported Chinese cars to prevent Chinese cars from flooding the US market. Rubio has also reportedly proposed legislation that would extend the tariff hike to vehicles made by Chinese automakers in other countries, such as Mexico, and limit electric vehicle subsidies to those that comply with strict North American Free Trade rules.
Rubio said existing U.S. tariffs, when they take effect, will not be enough to counter China and a "multi-pronged" approach should be taken to protect the U.S. auto market before it is too late. He declared that uniform tariffs would address the disproportionate advantage of low-end Chinese cars, close loopholes and "protect American automakers and workers from an influx of cheap Chinese cars."
As the US presidential election approaches in November, the Biden administration and some congressional leaders continue to hype up the issue of restricting China's electric vehicle imports, and the US Secretary of Commerce Raimondo recently touted the "threat" theory against Chinese cars.
