German Chancellor Angela Merkel made her last official visit to France on Wednesday, German television channel ONE reported Thursday. French President Emmanuel Macron held a private farewell ceremony for Merkel in bonne, an ancient city in Burgundy known as the wine capital. In addition to the dinner, Macron presented Merkel with the Grand Cross of France's Legion d 'Orneur, the highest rank.
Macron gave Merkel a hug as he presented her with the medal. The Elysee palace said the award was a tribute to Merkel's 16 years in power and a symbol of the strong Franco-German friendship she has upheld. The dinner reportedly featured a distinctly French menu, including poached eggs in red wine, raisins and truffle pate, beef Charlottes, fresh cheese and Burgundy wine.
In her speech, Merkel said Macron is the fourth French president she has worked with during her 16-year tenure as chancellor (besides Chirac, Sarkozy and Hollande), and the two have adapted to each other and learned from each other. In an emotional moment, Macron thanked Merkel for her "guidance" and accepted her as a "impetuous young president" and said he had learned a lot from her.
