On July 12, the Ecuadorian prosecutor's office said it had sentenced five people involved in the murder of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio to between 12 and 34 years in prison.
The prosecutor's office said Carlos Angulo, also known as "The Invisible Man," coordinated the assassination from an Ecuadorian prison and gave orders to another person via video. The other ringleader, Laura Castillo, provided the gunmen with logistical support such as motorcycles and money. Both were sentenced to 34 years and eight months in prison. In addition, the sentence for the principal and accomplice included $100,000 in compensation to Villavicencio's family.
The perpetrator of the murder of Fernando Villavicencio was shot dead by police on the same day. Thirteen people, including seven Colombians, were killed while in custody in prisons in Guayaquil and Quito in October.
