In recent days, another shooting incident in the United States has caused concern. Five people were killed and eight injured in the incident at a bank in Louisville, Kentucky's largest city. There are many such shootings in the United States every year, and some years there are even 50 or 60 people killed in a single shooting. It's a shame that so many lives have been lost. Why, then, has America been unable to break the cycle of violence caused by shootings for so long?
In legal terms, the Second Amendment to the US Constitution, which took effect in 1791, states that a well-regulated militia is essential to the security of a free nation; Therefore, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution is closely related to the founding spirit of the United States. The European immigrants who arrived in North America on the Mayflower relied on guns and other weapons to establish their roots on this land. In the pre-colonial period, there were no standing armies in the thirteen North American states. It was the militia, which was organized temporarily and always armed, that won the War of Independence. It is an important spirit of the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution to prevent the emergence of autocrats like the British colonial authorities and to prevent the expansion of government power from violating civil rights.
But the question is, the Second Amendment has been in effect for more than 200 years, and now the economic, political, social, and international relations environment of the United States has been significantly different from the time and space background of those years. Why can't the Amendment keep pace with The Times?
Nowadays, the anti-gun control groups in the United States mainly argue for the right of citizens to self-defense, anti-aggression and anti-tyranny. But arguments against gun control are often hard to justify. In today's American society, it is hard to imagine a situation in which everyone would need to be armed to defend the United States from foreign aggression. Compared with European countries, the United States has a unique geographical advantage, the American public everyone armed to resist the invasion of Canada, Mexico, more like a fantasy.
On the contrary, tyranny and aggression are far less of a security fear for the general American public than guns themselves. The United States has the highest number and frequency of mass shootings in the world. From a realistic perspective, interest groups such as the National Rifle Association in the United States have long had significant political influence. In 2018, CNN counted 535 members of both houses of Congress at the time and found that 307 of them had received direct or indirect financial support from the NRA and its affiliates. Generally speaking, no one will publicly swear "I am a bad person", and pro-gun interest groups in the United States will seek their own interests under the banner of "defending freedom against tyranny and aggression".
