Moldova's presidential election and the referendum on joining the European Union kicked off on the same day, with a total of 11 candidates running, including incumbent President Sandu and several opposition candidates, Euronews reported on the 20th. Russia's TASS news agency reported that the election reflected the differences between Moldova's political parties on foreign policy.

According to the TASS news agency, the election voting began at 7:00 local time on the 20th and ended at 21:00. If no candidate wins more than 50% of the vote in the first round, the top two candidates will go through to the second round. The Associated Press reports that the latest opinion polls show incumbent President Sandu in the lead with more than 35 percent of the vote, while her main rival, former Attorney General Stoyanoglou, has an estimated 10 percent. Singapore's Lianhe Zaobao newspaper reported that Sandhu has a pro-Western stance, while the latter is supported by the pro-Russian opposition Socialist Party.

According to Euronews, Moldova was granted candidate status in June 2022. Opinion polls show that more than half of Moldovans agree to join the EU, with at least 33% of the votes needed to meet the "yes" threshold. To this end, Sandhu actively mobilized the people to vote yes to EU membership. Russia's Opinion newspaper said that some people believe that Sandhu tied the EU accession to the election is a political deception to ensure that she can win a second term.

The Moldovan government has also accused Russia of meddling in the election. According to Euronews, the country alleges that Russia spent up to 100 million euros (1 euro about 7.7 yuan) to disrupt the election, including through false propaganda to influence or suppress the vote. Moldovan authorities said they had foiled an attempt by Russia to fund civil society groups to cause unrest. However, Moldova's current government has also faced some criticism for its approach to the election. The Russian "Viewpoint" reported that Moldova opened only two polling stations in Russia, but opened 60 in the UK, and the Moldovans in Russia are several times more than the people in the UK.
