The news that Saudi Arabia and Iran have agreed to resume diplomatic relations under the mediation of China has attracted the attention of the world. According to Reuters, German Chancellor Scholz said Wednesday that he welcomed the signing of a document between Saudi Arabia and Iran to restore diplomatic relations after years of hostility.

Reuters reported that Scholz made the above remarks at a joint press conference with Bhutan's Prime Minister Lota Tserin on Friday. "It's good that Saudi Arabia and Iran want to develop a less hostile relationship with each other, that's all we can say," he said at the time.

Saudi Arabia and Iran, bitter Middle East foes, have shaken hands in a deal brokered by China. On March 10, China, Saudi Arabia and Iran signed and issued a joint statement announcing that the two sides agreed to resume diplomatic relations. After the joint statement was issued, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a statement through his spokesperson on the 10th, welcoming the resumption of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran and thanking China for facilitating the dialogue. Guterres said the good-neighborliness between Saudi Arabia and Iran has helped promote stability in the Gulf region. The Arab world was also the first to speak out. The secretary general of the Gulf Cooperation Council for Arab States, Jassim Mohamed al-Budawi, said he welcomed the agreement to restore Saudi-Iranian relations and all measures that would help strengthen security and peace in the region, Al Jazeera reported. Iraq, Oman, Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Turkey and Bahrain also welcomed the resumption of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran. In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives issued a statement on the 10th, welcoming the tripartite joint statement issued by Saudi Arabia, Iran and China, and decided to restore diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Iran.
