According to Russia's TASS news agency, Iran's Mehr news agency reported on the 5th, Syria's ambassador to Russia, Bashar Jaafari, said that Syria has applied to join the BRICS cooperation mechanism.
"We are very interested in joining the BRICS cooperation mechanism. We have submitted a written application to join the mechanism." Bashar Jaafari spoke to TASS on the sidelines of a conference entitled "North Caucasus: New Geostrategic Opportunities."
This year, Russia holds the rotating presidency of the BRICS countries. In 2006, the foreign ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, and China held their first meeting, marking the beginning of BRICS cooperation. In response to the financial crisis, the leaders of the four countries held their first meeting in Russia in June 2009, and the cooperation mechanism among BRICS countries was officially launched. In December 2010, the four countries formally admitted South Africa to the mechanism on the basis of consensus.
In January, with the addition of new members, the number of BRICS members rose to 10, while the "waiting list" for applicants continues to grow. The expanded BRICS countries account for nearly half of the world's population and one-fifth of global trade, becoming an important force in promoting a multi-polar world.
