The European Union has approved new rules banning large retailers from destroying unsold clothing and footwear in a bid to crack down on "fast fashion" and reduce waste.

German Broadcasting Corporation reported on the 8th that many people will return clothes after buying them online, and many clothes are hanging in the store without anyone buying them, and these clothes are generally destroyed directly. According to the European Commission, EU countries produce 12.6 million tons of textile waste each year, of which only 22% can be recycled, with the rest usually shredded or burned. For those businesses, it is cheaper to destroy the clothes than to donate or recycle them.

Delara Burkhart, a member of the European Parliament, said consumers alone cannot transform the global textile industry and that the EU must legally require manufacturers and large fashion companies to operate more sustainably. However, the new rules approved by the EU will not be implemented immediately, with a two-year transition period in principle for large companies and a six-year transition period for medium-sized companies, while small businesses are exempt.
