To the strains of "God Bless America," former President Donald Trump waved to a cheering crowd at his campaign rally on a fairgrounds in Butler, Pennsylvania, at 6:02 p.m. local time on Saturday and began his rally speech under a hot sun.
Minutes later, Trump pointed to a projection of a chart and said illegal border crossings in the United States had surged under his opponent, President Joe Biden. "This chart is months old," Trump told the crowd. "If you want to see something really sad --"
It was then, at about 6:13, that shots suddenly rang out, at least five of them. Secret Service agents in dark uniforms rushed toward Trump, who covered his ears. The agents shouted, "Get down!" Trump on the ground. The field in front of him was packed with thousands of congregants who fell down in unison, and there was silence on the grass, with an occasional scream.
Rico Elmore, the vice chairman of the Beaver County Republican Party, was sitting in the guest section facing Mr. Trump when he said he heard what sounded like firecrackers.
"So, everybody froze for a second - and I realized, this is real shooting." So I yelled, 'Get down! '" he said.
Elmore watched as Secret Service agents assisted Trump off the stage, his white shirt unbuttoned, his red hat off his head, his cheeks covered in blood, and a group of Secret Service agents pressed their bodies against him. "We have to leave, we have to leave," one of them pleaded.
"Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute," Trump ordered, his voice breaking but sounding surprisingly clear. They stopped unwillingly. Mr. Trump then looked out to the crowd, then extended his arms to the sky, made an aggressive fist gesture and shouted "fight, fight."
As agents pushed Trump toward the stairs, the crowd began chanting "USA! USA!" When they reached the last step, they stopped again. The crowd cheered even louder. Agents then escorted Trump quickly into his vehicle and away.
At that point, Elmore heard someone to his left calling for paramedics. Elmore, who was familiar with first aid and CPR from his military service, knew that paramedics couldn't get to the scene fast enough at the moment. So he took off his tie and jumped over the barricade, but as he neared the victim, Elmore found him shot in the head too late. The man is unresponsive.
"It's horrible," Elmore said. "I pray for the families who have to deal with this and are going through this. Because it's tough. It was tough."
He said the shots came from behind the stands, but no gunman was seen.
The Butler County District Attorney confirmed that the shooting suspect and a rally participant were dead. Two other people at the rally were seriously injured. Trump himself has been safely released from the hospital.
U.S. officials say the shooting is being investigated as an attempted assassination. Law enforcement officials recovered an AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle from a deceased white man they believe was the gunman, who was killed. The federal department is conducting an emergency trace of the weapon using its national firearms procurement database, which is critical to identifying the shooter.
