According to a Reuters report on April 11, Iranian sources said that Iran has told the United States that Tehran has sent a signal to Washington that Iran will respond to the Israeli attack on the consular section of the Iranian embassy in Syria in a way that avoids a serious escalation of the situation and will not act hastily.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdullahiyan delivered the message to Washington during a recent visit to Oman, which often acts as an intermediary between Tehran and Washington, the sources said.
A White House spokesman declined to comment on any information from Iran, but said the United States had made clear to Iran that it was not involved in the attack on the embassy. The Omani government and Iran's Foreign ministry were not immediately available for comment.
A source familiar with the U.S. intelligence community was not aware of the Iranian message via Oman, but said Iran was "very clear" that its retaliation against Israel should be "manageable" and "non-escalatory." The diplomatic messages suggest that Iran is taking a careful approach in weighing how to respond to an Israeli attack, both to deter further such Israeli actions and to avoid a military escalation that could provoke the United States.
