On May 16 local time, a police officer in El Salvador was killed by suspected gang members. El Salvador's government sent more than 5,000 soldiers and 500 police officers to surround the northern city of Nova Concepcionne on Monday, and President Nayib Bukele said they would trace those responsible for the case.
"They will pay dearly for the murder of our heroes," Bukele said on Twitter, Al Jazeera reported on May 17. It added that Salvadoran forces would look for "entire gangs and their collaborators who are still hiding out there."
There is a precedent for the Salvadorian government to deploy troops in Nova Concepcion. In October, 2,000 soldiers and police surrounded the city of Comasagua, about 30km south-west of the capital SAN Salvador, and detained 50 people over two days. In December, the Salvadoran government used about 10,000 soldiers and police to cordon off the neighborhood of Soapango on the outskirts of the capital to arrest suspects.
Since 2022, Bukele's government has launched a nationwide crackdown on gangs in El Salvador, which has won wide public support but also raised concerns about systemic crime. Bukele's government declared a "state of exception" in March 2022 and restricted some civil liberties after a series of killings by gangs. Since then, the Salvadoran government has extended the order to maintain the "exceptional status" 14 times.
Neighborhoods once ruled by gangs have become safer for the country's residents, who have largely expressed support for the policies of the Bukele government after years of violence and exploitation by gangs.
