The Age Of European Defence Autonomy? Hungarian PM: We Can No Longer Count On The US To Protect Us

On November 7, local time, the fifth European Political Community Leaders' Meeting was held in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, with 47 national and regional leaders invited to attend. The participants decided to promote European defense autonomy.

The morning's plenary session focused on security challenges facing Europe, followed by four breakout sessions on migration, economic security related to energy, transport and information technology, connectivity, and global trade. In addition, the impact of Trump's victory in the US presidential election on the future of US-European relations is also concerned.

At a press conference after the meeting, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, the host, said that the current situation facing Europe is "difficult, complex, and dangerous." The Russia-Ukraine conflict has entered its third year, the situation in the Middle East is also at risk of escalation, in North Africa, the conflict is destabilizing the region, and illegal migration poses a continuing challenge to Europe. In this context, the participants must examine how to restore peace and stability in Europe. Mr. Orban said the leaders had agreed to push for European defense autonomy.

Hungarian PRIME MINISTER VIKTOR OrBAN (SOUNDBITE) (English): In the future, we should respond to a major change. Countries agree that Europe should achieve peace as soon as possible, and countries agree that Europe should take more responsibility for its own peace and security. To put it bluntly, we cannot count on the United States to protect us.

In May 2022, French President Emmanuel Macron proposed the establishment of a European political community, within which EU countries and non-EU countries and regions could find a new space for political cooperation. The Czech Republic, Moldova, Spain, and the United Kingdom have each hosted the first four European Political Community leaders' meetings. The next session is scheduled for spring 2025 in Albania.
