Integrated Russian news agency, TASS news agency reported that Pentagon spokesman Ryder said in a statement on the 7th local time that US Defense Secretary Austin is still hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, recovering well, and he talked with US President Joe Biden on the 6th. Earlier, the Pentagon did not inform the White House of Austin's hospitalization in a timely manner, surprising the White House.
According to TASS news agency, Ryder said in a statement on the same day that Austin is still at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, recovering well and in good mental state. Since resuming his duties on the evening of the 5th, Austin has received updates on dod operations and provided necessary guidance to his team.
Ryder also said in a statement, "The Secretary spoke with President Biden yesterday. He is also in contact with Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Lt. Gen. Brown and his senior staff."
TASS noted that the statement did not give a specific date for Austin's discharge from the hospital. The US Capitol Hill newspaper quoted the New York Times on the 7th as saying that a US official revealed that Biden spoke with Austin on the evening of the 6th.
ABC News and other media previously reported that Austin was taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on the 1st of this month and then transferred to the intensive care unit. The alleged cause was complications after minor surgery. ABC quoted two people familiar with the matter as saying that the Pentagon did not inform Sullivan of Austin's illness until January 4, and Sullivan then informed Biden. The White House and other officials were surprised that it took so long for the Pentagon to let them know about Austin. The Pentagon did not make the news public until the evening of Jan. 5 local time, notifying Congress about 15 minutes before issuing a public statement. Austin said in a statement on Saturday that he took "full responsibility" for not disclosing information about an unknown condition that kept him hospitalized for a week.
