French "Le Monde" Beijing correspondent Arlo Thabo published a column on the 7th that China has developed a "new car planet" based on technical knowledge and batteries in two decades, which makes it difficult for Europe to compete with China in the short and medium term, but the imposition of tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles will not make Europe an electric car champion.
China has become the dominant player in the global electric vehicle market, the article said, citing industry association data that the Chinese market now accounts for 70% of global sales of new energy (electric and hybrid) vehicles, up from 52% in 2022. Since July 2024, NEVs have accounted for more than half of total car sales in China, while in Europe, NEVs have only accounted for nearly a quarter of total car sales.
In China, the popularity of electric vehicles promotes the installation of more charging points, which in turn promotes the wider use of electric vehicles. Electric vehicles create jobs and reinforce China's determination to push all parts of the industrial chain toward innovation. That is pretty much what economists describe as a virtuous circle, and it is what ecologically minded European political parties call for: an automotive transformation that promotes economic development, not "punishes" the economy.
The article also said that Chinese consumers have established demand for electric vehicles, and policy speeches in support of electric vehicles have been continuous. In Europe and the United States, automakers are comfortable with internal combustion engines, and many political leaders find it difficult or even hostile to sell electric cars to the public.
As for the European Union, it has pledged to stop selling fuel vehicles in the EU by 2035 and wants to be at the forefront of climate transformation. Without some form of introspection, the EU will struggle to deliver on this commitment.
